What if your next birthday came with $1 million for every year you’ve been alive? 💰
There’s just one catch…
You have to give away half.
So, what would you do with the money that’s left?
I was driving in the car this morning thinking about how I could help one of my sons think bigger and more expansively about his future.
I started thinking about the usual “magic wand” question.
If you could have anything, what would you choose?
But honestly that’s too vague for me.
I naturally think in numbers and financial outcomes.
So I thought… What if I had $1 million?
Too small.
I couldn’t even buy my dream house for cash with that amount.
So the number kept getting bigger.
$2 million.
$5 million.
$10 million.
I needed a number that felt big enough to think expansively, but realistic enough that it still had meaning… So I chose my age!!
Then something interesting happened.
My first thought was to give money to my loved ones.
And that made me realise something.
If I’m asking my son, or anyone else, to do this exercise, part of their brain may still be thinking about responsibility.
What about my family?
What about the people I care about?
So I added one simple rule:
You have to give away half.
Suddenly, that part was taken care of.
Family, friends, charity… whoever matters to you.
Now this gives you the permission to focus on yourself:
What do YOU actually want?
How much would you Keep?
How would you Spend it?
Would you Invest?
Would you Travel?
Buy something you’ve always wanted?
Build something?
Change Careers?
Start a new or different Business?
The goal now became specific enough to feel real, but expansive enough to reveal possibilities that may not have been considered before.
To Simplify it, Goal Setting with Specificity.
This goal setting method I feel would work particularly well for critical thinkers.
Business owners.
Sales professionals.
Accountants.
Finance professionals.
And anyone who naturally thinks in numbers, financial outcomes and tangible results rather than unlimited possibilities.
Because sometimes the fastest way to discover what you really want…
is to put a number on it.

What would I do with what’s left?
